MDI Vietnam trading activities specialize in agricultural and handicraft commodities from Vietnam that deliver strong pro-poor benefits. This includes products that are produced by farmer groups and rural small and medium enterprises. MDI has recently been certified as the first Fairtrade certified exporter and processor of cashew kernels in Vietnam, and as a Fairtrade certified exporter and processor of tea. MDI is also the first Vietnamese Fairtrade licensee which can develop labeled Fairtrade products. In addition, MDI is Utz Certified for coffee trading and export, and we are working with a number of producer groups and processors to develop a Fairtrade production and trading system for Arabica coffee. 

Tea

Betterday is working hard with farmer partners to produce a wide range of high quality organically grown teas from Vietnam. The betterday tea range now includes traditional Vietnamese green teas, highland green teas, jasmine tea, highland black teas, ancient tree green teas, wild tree green and jasmine teas, earl grey tea, Christmas tea and Masala Chai.

All the betterday tea range is produced organically, without the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. In addition, many of the products are certified as Organic to EU standards and most of the farmer groups producing the products are certified by FLO to Fairtrade production standards. Organic production guarantees the health of you and your family and Fairtrade production helps to improve social and environmental conditions for Vietnamese farm families.

Green tea is a traditional form of tea consumed in many Asian cultures.  Traditional light processing techniques mean that the delicate taste and aroma of fresh tea leaves is present in the flavour of every cup of green tea. Rich in antioxidants, green tea consumption can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes. In association with farmer groups, Betterday produces green tea from traditional Vietnamese midland tea varieties, the upland Shan Tuyet variety and from ancient tea tree  and wild tea tree varieties.

Jasmine tea is made with fresh spring harvested green tea. Night opened freshly picked jasmine flowers are used to scent the tea in the traditional manner. This process is repeated twice to ensure that every cup has a delicate aroma of jasmine that does not overpower the natural green tea flavour.

Black Tea is produced through the process of rolling and fermenting tea leaves. Betterday black tea is  an orthodox processed tippy black tea with a smooth flavour and chocolate notes. It is made from the Shan Tuyet tea variety.  Black tea is also the basis for our range of Earl Grey, Christmas Tea and Masala Chai.

Our teas are all non-blended single origin teas coming from groups of smallholder farmers. Each tea origin is generally confined to within a single upland commune. Take a look at our Tea Origins page for more details.

Coffee

betterday coffees are made with finest hand picked Arabica coffee from smallholder coffee farmers in Vietnam. Selected high altitude (more than 1000m elevation) coffees are small-batch roasted to ensure high quality and smooth taste and are vacuum sealed to maintain freshness and flavour to the consumer. Betterday also roasts selected fairtrade and organic single origin coffees from around the world.

Produced in conjunction with Thai ethnic minority farmers in Son La province, this is a wet-processed Arabica with very different characteristics to those you have come to expect from Vietnamese coffee. Try it and be surprised! All coffee is freshly roasted and ground.
